Around the 1960's is when the Gay Movement has its roots. Sexual Liberation grew and became a civil rights movement with expressions as a choice of personal freedom and taste. Around 1970 is when the movement became more prominent with riots in New York. Police raids caused rioting and pride parades in 1970. A few years led to Homosexuality being more recognized. Religious groups saw it as a problem, among it unrighteous and unholy. Being gay was interpreted as drug users and fanatics. The disease epidemic began ins 1981, and soon lead to major political recognition in 1987. In today's society AIDs is still prevalent and is now seen as a major disease. Today the movement is widespread and more recognized as something that is more accepted, depending on the country and state it occupies. There are still setbacks, but the movement is still on the rise.
